My Bathroom Before and After

Categories Before & After

When I bought my 1930 house, it needed a little help—especially the bathroom. The bathroom door opened into the small 6’x7′ room making it feel even smaller. So first thing, I had my handy-woman reverse the door so that it opened out of the bathroom. The tile was dirty and looked disgusting, but thankfully there are professionals with professional steamers that can make it look new! See the snapshots below that the serviceman took. The difference was incredible!

The threshold in the doorway looked cheap and ugly. My super handy friend James helped me remove the ugly piece of metal and replace it. The wood floor and the tile floor are different heights so it took some ingenuity to build up the space and make the store-bought threshold piece work.

Next, I needed more storage. Without a bathroom countertop, I needed somewhere for my makeup and skincare products. I found this tall skinny Ikea cabinet on Facebook Marketplace for a great deal. Next, the wood mirror and wood vanity had to go, because they made the room seem smaller and darker. I needed to brighten up the windowless space. I found a round mirror on Marketplace and painted the rim black. I painted the vanity white—blending it in so that it visually takes up less space. I gave the walls a fresh coat of brighter white paint. I spray-painted my knobs, the towel rod, and toilet paper holder bracket black. (Note: months later, the black spray paint is chipping off, so I probably should have read up on how best to paint over metal painted surfaces.) I found a new vanity light and installed it. To give me what amounts to counter space, I found a picture ledge that I installed and I use as a shelf for my products as I get ready.

The placement of the shelf was in line with the electrical outlet which meant I had to move it down a bit and fill the hole I created. My new electrical wiring experience made me confident that I could do this on my own.

I love the addition of the architectural stool that I found on Marketplace. It keeps the space from being too white without making it feel crowded and comes in handy. Artwork and a white striped shower curtain completed the look.
