Find keystrokes on a Mac

Today I learned something I can’t believe I didn’t already know! I learned how to find keystrokes on a Mac. I have used glyph characters within my design programs, but didn’t know how to go about finding them within nondesign-related software. It’s so simple. Hold down Apple + Option + T and a window pops up. Who knew? You can find arrows, degree symbols, parentheses and bullet options, and the like. This works in programs such as TextEdit and on the web, typing in a message or post in Facebook, but didn’t work within my Mac Mail program. However, I can copy/paste the character from TextEdit into a Mac Mail window.

A way to stop Apple-Picking

Apple-picking is a term for used for smart phone thefts. CNN reported today that Apple has announced they are adding a ‘kill switch’ to iOS7. Which means “The feature will require an Apple ID and password before the phone’s ‘Find My iPhone’ feature can be turned off or any data can be erased.” and “…the same ID and password will be needed to reactivate a device after it’s been remotely erased.”

Also within the sample article it says that the Federal Communications Commission is creating a database for smartphones reported stolen. “Phones on the database, which is scheduled to be up and running at the end of November, could not be activated and would not work on an LTE network in the United States.” Whew! Finally a way, to make smart phones less of a target for thieves!

Cool Apple video

Check out this typographic video by Apple. “…simple phrases paired with elegant visuals describe the thoughts and emotions that go into creating each Apple product.”

Fixing your Mac (or PC)

I’ve mentioned ifixit once before and it’s on my mind again. My open MacBook Pro slid off my desk when I walked away, hitting the tile floor with a big thud and bending the upper case (the casing around the keyboard and trackpad). Now, my trackpad sticks frequently and my curser jumps around giving me unexpected/undesired results. I took the laptop to Apple’s Genius Bar and they ran tests and everything checked out fine. So I’ve ordered a used A+ condition top case off of eBay ($36 + $9 shipping) and will be installing it as soon as it comes in. Buying a used upper case and installing it myself is saving me hundreds of dollars. Thank you ifixit!

TidBits: An Apple News Website

And one last Apple tidbit for today. I found a website called TidBits that keeps you informed of all the latest Apple and Macintosh news. The website’s design leaves much to be desired—it’s the opposite of a beautiful, streamlined Apple design experience, however, what it lacks in aesthetics, it seems to make up for in newsworthy information. If you want to keep up-to-date on what’s going on the Mac world, you should check it out.

Now, I think it’s time for an apple with almond butter. Enjoy your day!
